Nicolaes Petter - Bierkaai Syllabus
Since 2009 the South East Asian martial art Aliran Tempur Ikhtiar is experimenting and training this traditional Amsterdam syllabus of original techniques, variations and additions.
Aliran Tempur Ikhtiar is linked to Amsterdam through one of its  seniors, who is a born and bred Amsterdammer who speaks the Mokum-dialect, But also through the influence of Indonesian, Dutch-Indo and Dutch-Indonesian martial arts.

Nicolaes Petter wrote a book about his fighting techniques which was published in Amsterdam by bookseller Johannes Janssonius van Waesberge in the year 1674. The 'translation' Ikhtiar uses however, is not a simple direct translation which can be misunderstood. It is a more detailed description of what the techniques are meant to embody and more. It has been named the 'Bierkaai Syllabus'. The typical traditional Amsterdam way of fighting which contains the tactic of rushing-in and making contact is very similar to the Ikhtiar philosophy and technique of 'Sentuhan'.

Soo waarlijk fweert gy.

Forthcoming biography and training manual featuring the life and martial art of Claas Petterzoon (Nicolaes Petter)

According to many martial artists and historians, the world's first usable martial arts book was published in 1674: 'Klare onderrichtinge der voortreffelijke worstel-konst' or 'Clear tuition in the excellent art of wrestling' by Nicolaes Petter from Amsterdam. This is of course a very bold statement. It is true that almost all previously published books focused on weaponry and only touched the topic of empty hand combat sporadically. All were basically written for people who were in some way associated with soldiering or dueling.
Photography was not invented yet and the art of describing movement of the human body in drawing or in writing was only mastered by few. Great masters like Albrecht Durer have made drawings and etchings for martial arts books, but artists who had the vision of an illustrator had more success in making it understandable. Pictures in martial arts books need to tell you only one thing, and not a long story with symbolism and distractive elements in the background. Petter's book contained 71 etching by Romeyn de Hooghe. Romeyn de Hooghe was a gifted artist and illustrator and showed the world how to create such a book. Nicolaes Petter was not interested in a book on soldiering or dueling. Petter's goal was a manual with the basics of self defense against the most common attacks you might encounter in the streets and public places of Amsterdam.
Nicolaes Petter's art has been practiced ever since and has travelled to countries on the other side of the world.
